چکیده

A 31-year-old man sustained a 1,064-nm Q-switched Nd:YAG laser injury to his left eye. One month after the injury, the fundus and optical coherence tomography (OCT) examination demonstrated a full-thickness macular hole of approximately 820 μm in diameter. After vitrectomy and internal limiting membrane peeling, OCT showed closure of the hole and a marked thinning of the foveal depression. After 12 months of follow-up, his visual acuity improved from 20/60 to 20/20. The MP1-microperimeter demonstrated increased retinal sensitivity in the area of the previous macular hole and its adjacent region and improvement of fixation from a relatively unstable status to a stable status. The macular hole remained closed 24 months postoperatively with the best corrected visual acuity 20/20. Our results suggest that vitrectomy can improve the visual function when a macular hole is caused by Nd:YAG laser injury. The improvement in the visual function includes not only visual acuity but also retinal sensitivity and fixation stability that are obtained by using the MP1-microperimeter.

Vitrectomy for macular hole following Nd:YAG laser injury

The Q-switched Nd:YAG laser can cause significant ocular injury, because it can emit an invisible and powerful load of energy in a short period of time. One of these injuries is macular hole formation. We report the case of a 21-year-old woman who presented with acute floaters in her left eye after exposure to a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. Her initial best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in the lef...

AIMS To report the occurrence of paracentral scotomata after pars plana vitrectomy for idiopathic macular holes. METHODS In 15 patients static microperimetry using a Rodenstock scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO-105) was performed preoperatively and 6 or 12 weeks postoperatively (stimulus size 0.2 degrees (Goldmann II), employed intensity 0 and 12 dB, 20 degrees fields in all tests). PURPOSE To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Neodymium:YAG (Nd:YAG) laser capsulotomy for posterior capsule opacification (PCO) following combined phacoemulsification and vitrectomy for the treatment of cataract in association with macular hole (MH) or epiretinal membrane (ERM). METHODS Retrospective clinical study of 34 eyes of 34 patients who underwent combined cataract surgery and vitrec...

Outcome of Full-Thickness Macular Hole Surgery in Choroideremia

The development of a macular hole is relatively common in retinal dystrophies eligible for gene therapy such as choroideremia. However, the subretinal delivery of gene therapy requires an uninterrupted retina to allow dispersion of the viral vector. A macular hole may thus hinder effective gene therapy. Little is known about the outcome of macular hole surgery and its possible beneficial and/or...
